Curriculum Overview

The overall aim of the curriculum at Guiseley Primary School is to provide children with their National Curriculum entitlement through a broad based challenging curriculum.  The National Curriculum consists of 5 core subjects (English, Maths, Science, Computing and RE) and foundation subjects (History, Geography, Art, Music, Technology, PE) at Key Stage 1.  In addition, in Key Stage 2 the children learn a Modern Foreign Language which is currently French. 


Teaching Methods

Our children are organised into single aged year groups where possible and will be given 21 hours teaching time each week in Key Stage 1.  This excludes the daily act of collective worship, registration, lunchtime and play times.  Children are taught as a whole class, in small groups and individually.


Foundation Stages 0, 1 and 2 – all our foundation stage provisions follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS) which sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5.

Children in Nursery and Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. The curriculum is planned but is flexible where possible and seeks to reflect children's interests.

Practitioners use the four guiding principles. These are: • every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured; • children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships; • children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers; and • children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates.

There is a period of transition from the Foundation Stage curriculum to National Curriculum during the first half term of Year One. This practice enables the sound principles of Early Years teaching to aid progress in Year One. Children will experience provision from the EYFS whilst objectives will be taken from the National Curriculum for the majority of children.

Children in Years 1 and 2 follow the National Curriculum. The programmes of study for each subject are used as the basis for long and medium term planning. The curriculum is delivered using a thematic, cross-curricular approach to teaching and learning which is designed to stimulate creativity and arouse children's natural curiosity.

We place first-hand experience at the centre of the curriculum because we believe that children learn best when they are excited and involved and when they can see the relevance of what they are learning on their lives and interests. We have two curriculum drivers that enhance our curriculum across the school. These are (1) Learning Outdoors (2) SEAL/PSHE. We follow Leeds Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.

The curriculum throughout school is regularly enriched by using the locality, trips, visitors, musicians, theatre groups, focused weeks e.g. International Week, WOW Week, links with an African school etc.
