Personal Development Curriculum
At Guiseley Primary School, our children's personal development is at the heart of everything we do. Through our Rainbow Values - Respect, Achieve, Inclusive, Nurture, Belong, Outstanding, Whole Family - we foster a nurturing environment where every child is empowered to grow into a confident, compassionate and responsible citizen.
We aim to develop our pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural learning through our Curriculum Drivers - Diversity and Inclusion, Community, Sustainability, Wellbeing, Outdoor Learning and Aspiration - through our PSHE, RSHE and RE curriculum, assemblies and through providing a broad range of enrichment opportunities. Alongside this we develop an appreciation and understanding of the British Values and the way we can apply these in school through our 'Guiseley Values' and Protected Characteristics, fostering in our children an understanding of others and their differences.
British Values
British values are woven throughout our curriculum subjects and enriched with assemblies and experiences. We have worked with our children to deicide how we can demonstrate and promote the British Values within school and our wider community. These have become our 'Guiseley Values' and we use these to ensure that our children gain a sound moral compass during their time with us at Guiseley Primary and beyond.
Protected Characteristics
Assemblies
Each week, we have an assembly theme which promotes our school values, behaviour code, British Values, Protected Characteristics or which supports a wider theme such as Children in Need or Children's Mental Health Week. These themes are visited throughout the week both in assemblies and back in the classroom. Where we can, we invite members of the community in to deliver assemblies. This year these have included our local PCSO, The MindMate Support Team, local author Grace Olson and members of our Governing Body.
Healthy Schools - Healthy Schools Report 2024
We are delighted to have maintained our Healthy Schools Status and MindMate Friendly status following a validation visit from the Local Authority.
Some of the strengths identified during the assessment include:
▪ The warm, caring ethos of this school is very apparent.
▪ The school invests in health and wellbeing and the Healthy Schools programme continues to have a high profile. The personal development and meeting the needs of each child are key to the ethos of the school and staff work hard to do this.
▪ The school celebrates the ‘whole’ child; good relationships are key here and strengths and achievements are celebrated. Interactions that I observed over the morning were all warm, supportive and respectful.
▪ The pupils are a credit to the school and the behaviour I saw on the day was excellent. Pupils were happy, confident, engaged, polite and friendly and demonstrated an excellent knowledge of health and wellbeing.
▪ Parents clearly trust in the school and feel their children are safe and nurtured by all members of staff.
▪ All stakeholders reported that communication is good across school. Parents are grateful for the informative newsletters and curriculum overviews they receive. On a one to one level they feel school keeps them very well informed about their child’s progress. Staff have regular briefings as well as staff meetings.
▪ Pupils were enthusiastic about the food they are served at lunchtime. The cook is very much part of the school team, and the Year 6 pupils enjoy preparing the fruit and vegetables with her for the meals and the salad bar.
▪ The physical environment is very well kept. Displays are informative and attractive, all areas in and out of school are clean and tidy and the pupils benefit from a range of outdoor equipment, including an outdoor gym.
Pupil Voice Groups
Student Council
At the start of the school year, children across school participated in a democratic vote to choose the two children who will represent their class at Student Council this year.
As well as listening to suggestions and ideas from classes and bringing them to our meetings, student councillors will get involved in lots of areas of school during the 2025-26 academic year including developing the outdoor classroom and fund raising for a local charity. We are also busy reviewing our school behaviour policy.
Sports Leaders
At Guiseley Primary, children have the opportunity to apply to become a Sports Leader; it is a role which brings great responsibility and enjoyment. It is a role in which the older children are able to become role models within the school as well as develop their basic coaching skills in a range of sports.
Our Sports Leaders support the lunchtime team by ensuring that playground games and activities are set up every lunchtime and encourage other children to play co-operatively. They meet throughout the year, to look at how activities and sports can be improved across school.
The children play an invaluable role in encouraging others to try new games and sports and to feel that they belong in our school family.
Sports Leaders develop essential skills for life such as:
- Communication skills
- Valuable team working skills
- Ability to lead others
- Greater understanding of responsibility
- Innovative and creativity skills
- Respect for others

Eco Warriors
The Eco Warriors are a group of children from Years 1 to 6, who meet weekly to discuss environmental and sustainability issues and projects. They lead on various projects throughout the school year that help our school be more environmentally friendly. They are currently working on ways to reduce litter and dog fouling in our local community alongside Councillor Thomson. In school the Eco Warriors are focussing on reducing the amount of electricty used and also on reducing the amount of paper waste.
