Year 4 - Amber Class and Coral Class
Year 4 Welcome Booklets
Curriculum overview
Autumn 2
Year 4 have had a busy second half term getting ready for Christmas.
in English, the children watched an animation from 'Literacy shed' called 'The little shoemaker' and did some brilliant diary writing inspired by this. In Maths, we started our multiplication work which included lots of times tables practise. In DT, the children loved baking. The children had to design a biscuit recipe with a purpose e.g. 'Christmas biscuits' and edit a basic biscuit recipe to fulfil their brief. They even did some budgeting! The children also enjoyed Geography this half term, where they learnt about compass directions and grid references. They used the 'Digimaps' website to look at the local area and find grid references for places they are familiar with.
The children did a fantastic job at the end of the half term putting together a new play called 'Christmas tree capers'. All the decorations on the Christmas tree are in a mess and it takes the magic of some very bossy fairies to get things sorted out for Christmas. Well done, children!
Autumn 1
What a fun filled first half term we had in year 4.
We started the half term with a focus on our whole school programme ‘Zones of regulation’, completing a variety of tasks to begin categorising our feelings into 4 colours or ‘zones’. We revisit these daily in class and the colours are great for provoking conversations about ‘big feelings’ and what to do about them. In English, the children produced some wonderful writing about mythical creatures and wrote their own chapter based on 'Theseus and the Minotaur'. In Maths, we began our calculation work, completing the column methods for addition and subtraction. In History, we learnt about ancient Greece and some of the significant achievements e.g. Olympic games. In Art, we designed and made Greek theatre masks, using mod roc. In ancient Greek times, this was so that they could be seen from far away! In Science, we loved learning about sound and completed a number of experiments, this half term. We particularly enjoyed testing what happened when you put varied amounts of liquid into glass bottles and tapped them. In Computing, we learnt about networks and the internet this half term. We brought this to life by passing messages between computers, switches and routers.
The children have settled really well and it’s been a fun half term. Well done, children.
Welcome to Year 4
What a wonderful start to the year we have had in year 4. When we arrived in our new classrooms, there was a mysterious box labelled 'Do not open...' The children found it very hard to ignore and for days they were tempted to open it. Eventually, like Pandora, they opened the box. Luckily, no evil came flying out but it was an exciting way to start our topic all about Greek Myths! Take a look at some of the mythical creatures we have created in our early English lessons.
